  1. Do not buy a Toshiba.

They normally break within 6 months because their parts are cheapo.

Gateway and Acer are not that hot either.

You could get a nice Dell or HP for that price though.

  2. You arent going to get a very good laptop in that price range, but for $1000 you could get a decent one.

First thing, RAM is cheap and easy to install. Its a no brainer. You can put in whatever you want when you get one, but its not intelligent to limit yourself to one that comes with 3gb, when its less than $50 to get an extra 2gb.

Secondly, if you are playing games, you are going to want to have a good graphics card. The Nvidia 8600 series is the best for the price, but since this is a laptop, you cannot upgrade the card later, you must buy it with the card originally.

This is the computer I recommend ONLY IF YOU ARE A GAMER:

IF YOU DO NOT GAME, you dont need over 2gb of ram, you dont need a fast cpu (the cpu has no effect on the loading times, only on execution of data, like playing music and videos). If you dont game, the most important thing to you would be storage and battery life. Any cpu and video card will do if you do not game. Taking that into account, I recommend the Lenovo X61 series, which would be about $700 with 3gb of ram and a 250gb hard drive. The x61 has a 6-7 hour battery life, the second longest you can get next to the x200 series, which gets 8 hours. It does only have a 1.3ghz core 2 duo cpu, but I can tell you from personal experience that it is still extremely powerful. I have the 1.6 ghz core 2 duo, and when I clock it down to under 1ghz to save battery, it still runs everything I ask it to as smoothly as it did at full speed. I play games, edit dvds, and do just about everything with this thing, and It works great. When I replace it, I will replace it with a x61 or x200.
