Best traveller's cheques exchange rate for Tunisia?

I understand that you cannot take Tunsian Dinar in or out of Tunisia and that the exchange rate is set internally, thus I will need to take traveller's cheques for my impending holiday.

Does anyone have any Tunisian holiday savvy? Could you please advise in which currency it is best to buy traveller's cheques for the best exchange rate? i.e. GB pounds or US Dollars? I hear the Euro fares badly....

  1. take out sterling and change it there taking a safe when you get there as you do not want to take a lot of money out all of the time ??you will love it great place great people have a great time and do the dessert trip into the Sahara amazing?????

  2. I only ever take a few pounds with me just to 'tide me over' and then I use ATMs which everywhere. Much less hassle!

  3. DO NOT take travellers cheque - you pay commission to buy them and pay commission to exchange them. Take good old £ sterling. Tunisia has a 'closed' currency which means it can not be traded, exported, or imported into the country other than through the Govrnment National Bank. They strictly control all currency transactions. Never exchange more than about £100 at a time as you can not take the money out of the country if you have any left, and the when you are at the airport and have to change your Dina back to sterling, you may get a lower rate than you originally exchanged it at. Also remember to keep safe any and all currency transaction slips you are given as you will have to prove your exchanged your money in Tunisia if you ned to turn it back to sterling

  4. Travellers cheques is the worst way to do it, you will lose out on commission and exchange rate.

See this web page for the cheapest and best way.

  5. I went about 5 weeks ago and we took english pounds as they were the best at the time, not sure what it is now, cant see it being much different though.
