  1. The best type of tv's at the moment or current tv technology is plasma.

Plasma is the best performing tv tech at this very moment in time, and produces the best picture quality for movies and can also be really good for channel broadcasts.

Where plasma can succeed is in how it produces its natural lifelike onscreen colours, and in it's excessive ability to produce true blacks, and this is where lcd tv's have the disadvantage, in producing good dark scenes.

Plasma's can also cope impressively well with video footage that has fast motion in it, virtually showing no motion blur.

Currently, the top plasma tv manufacturers are panasonic and pioneer, both having the best tv's with plasma technology at the moment. Plasma's are the best for movies  and large screens of 46 inches and over.

Lcd tv's are the most popular choice of hdtv technology at the moment and thanks to its ability of producing punchy and strikingly detailed bright pictures, it can be excellent for hd footage.

Lcd's are also catching up with plasma in terms of blacks and colour naturalism, and some lcd's such as the ones from sony produce some of the most natural colours ever on a flatscreen and has the performance to beat even some plasma tv's!

The best Lcd tv manufacturers are sony and samsung, both producing sets with incredible picture quality, both companies tv's being the top choice for standard definition tv viewing (normal tv broadcasts) and especially high definition video, which is the new tv viewing format.

Lcd screens are best suited to sizes under 46 inches.

Just fractionally, plasma still remains the solid choice as it produces the most natural onscreen picture with excellent colour vibrancy and depth.

This however does not mean that lcd has lost. Lcd's can generally have a better picture for sources such as game systems that show out excellent clarity.

Another tv technology on the horizon is oled (organic light emitting diode) is shaping up to looking really good, both being independently developed by sony and samsung, the panel's are 3 millimetres thick and have brightness that not even lcd or plasma can rival, and colours are supposed to be very accurate, even more so than existing screen technologies and best of all they consume hardly any power, some oled's are apparently being able to produce as much power as a mobile phone and can create a massive onscreen image.

Sony have brought out an 11 inch oled already but are planning to make bigger sets up to 32 inches and over, and some of sony's new oled's are coming out in 2009 and thats when the flatscreen battles will truly begin.

Here's an excellent site that shows very professional comparisons between different flatscreen technologies

and aims to be as honest as possible, when providing expert opinions on tv's.
