Best underground, secret, not popular or popular food in san diego

Question

i want to know any restaurants that are extremely good in san diego but not the fancy ones, just regular hotdog places or whatever place where the atmosphere is fun and the food is great. whether it be a popular place or not just tell me. i wana go on a road trip haha

My favorite restaurants are never fancy but little hole in the wall places. A few of my favorite places I've discovered in San Diego are:

For amazing sandwiches: The Cheese Shop located at La Jolla Shores and there is one downtown.

Excellent fish tacos: South Beach Bar and Grill in Ocean Beach

Chinese Food: Dumpling Inn off of Convoy

There are plenty more but I can't seem to think of it now. Hope this helps!

Tokyo Sushi on El Cajon Blvd is the best!!!  It has a super fun atmosphere and the food is to die for (if you like sushi).

Bronx pizza is a local favorite. Downtown I'd definitely point you to Tin Fish, right across from the Convention Center, next to the Omni hotel. It's not fancy, but they serve awesome fish tacos, fish and chips, burgers, and beer. There's also some good Irish pub food downtown, try Dublin Squre or the Field.

Hillcrest has some gems too: Bombay, Taste of Thai, Hamburger Mary's, Kemosabe, and a couple foodie - only joints like Venissimo Cheese Company and (just down the street) Sausage King. Hillcrest also houses San Diego's best sushi value, Sushi Deli 1, a very popular spot with awsome specials and great sushi - the rolls shine here, as does the $.89 miso soup.

Mission Valley also has some great spots, especially around the hospital (Zion) on Mission Gorge Rd. I don't know if A Brooklyn Pizzeria is still in business, but they were a great place to watch a family feud while devouring enormous calzones. Roccadecca is there too, a great thai place, and in the same center as Saigon Star, which has Pho that's really good. There's a great tiny sushi spot across the street, in the souplantation shopping center.

Of course there's good mexican food everywhere, but a few places have specialties: Santana's in El Cajon has quesomush, a loaded quesadilla. There's a little blue taco shop in La Mesa, on Jackson Dr I think that has some of the best potato tacos I've ever had. Cafe Coyote in Old Town has some of the best carnitas, and their margaritas are no joke either.

Best Calimari in San Diego is at the San Diego Pier Co in Seaport Village. Best cheap and easy, mostly fried, seafood and Clam Chowder is hands down to be found at Point Loma Seafoods. I recommend the crab salad or crabcake sandwich and a bowl of white. Fried clams are also excellent.

And the best French Restaurant in San Diego, La Bastide Bistro is hiding in a little Vons shopping center up in Scripp's Ranch. Everything we've ever ordered there has been amazing. It's fancy, but not nearly as fancy or fussy as the other better-known and more expensive places. I would not feel out of place in jeans, but I probably wouldn't wear a t-shirt with them.

If you ever find yourself in El Centro, try Burgers and Beer, the best place for those two things and a lot more and family owned and operated for probably around 20 years.
