  1. If i lived near Kentucky, and did'nt want to go too far - I would go to Murray State. When I thought about being a veterinarian, I applied there because they have Equine Science in their ag program - and you could bring your horse and stable it there while you went to college (even use it in your Equine studies). Also - they had a state of the art Veterinary Center on campus that did research and catered to the surrounding communities. The website is www.murraystate.edu

  2. The University of Illinois has a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree program at the Champaign-Urbana campus. I don't know where you live in Kentucky but just for points of reference Urbana, Illinois is about a 4 hour drive from either Paducah or Louisville. Here is a link to the website:

  3. you know i live in kentucky too but im going to Penn state because its the best veterinary school in the country

  4. Their are many, But I was talking to a student and a few vets yesterday about the schools,, Some will only take students from their own state first !!

LIKE Texas AM prefer people from Texas and same with U.C.DAVIS

So If I where you , I would ck first on which one will take you first

I think Colorado is pretty much open to outsiders ,, Hope this helps a bit ?

    Try OHIO ,,Good Luck

  5. I have been researching this with my daughter, who will be attending The University of Pennslyvania in the fall.  The top ten Vet schools in the country are as follows.

    1. Cornell (NY)

    2. Colorado State University

    3. University of California Davis

    4. University of Pennslyvania

    5. North Carolina State University

    6. Ohio State University

    7. Texas A&M

    8. University of Wisconsin

    9. Michigan State University

    10. University of Minnesota

You did not say if you had a specialty in mind?  That should be a determining factor for you.  My daughter wants to specialize in Equine Medicine, so the Ivy League degree from Penn makes the most sense for her. Good Luck and best wishes to you.

  6. Michigan State has a great program. I've had a few horses that have been there over the years. Most of the vets I've used have come from MSU.

  7. The best VALUE in vet school will be the one in your home state, or one that has a reciprocal program with them.   Vet school is VERY expensive, you don't get scholarships, you can't have a job while you're doing it, and then you're stuck with huge loans afterwards.  Most schools cost a lot more for out of state students then for in state students.

If you want to practice in a particular state, you might consider that state's vet school, because it's true vets in that state will generally have a preference for that school. You can reduce your tuition after the first year by becoming a resident. Plus, when it comes time for passing the boards and getting licensed, you'll have been taught the stuff on the test.

If you want to practice in California, be aware their licensing and boards have very different requirements than most of the rest of the country.

Once you have the vet degree, if you want to become a board certified specialist, then it's worth it to go to one of the big name schools for the extra training.  They don't have as much bias towards their own students, though there may be some.
