I am looking for real answers here (preferably from JHU students). My dream would be to be accepted into JHU. Would it raise my chances of getting in more if I stayed in the IB program I am in now or take online high school courses from Stanford or Kaplan Unisversity? Please help I am trying to decide what I should do next year. Thanks!

  1. I am only a freshmen and that would be a DREAM come true for me to go that direction! I am going to attend Vanderbilt. I hope you get accepted! Read up on it!

  2. First, it's Johns Hopkins (it's not one person's name).

Whichever you choose, you need to get exceptional grades with quite a few AP and honors courses, as well as stellar SAT scores.  Even then, there are a lot of factors that go into admissions and some are out of your control.  Go over their website, look for other sites with info on Johns Hopkins, and plan your essays to reflect how you will contribute to the freshman class at a top school.

You should have about 7-11 schools on your target list, and JHU should be one of them.  An IB degree is highly regarded, but it's also what you put into the process--your effort, rigorous classwork, good extra-curricular activities that show leadership, and something that sets you apart.

  3. Actually, Johns Hopkins *was* one guy.  (Slightly weird family.)  But yeah, don 't leave off the "S."  They're sensitive about that.

Anyway, I would advise sticking with the IB if it's not driving you crazy for some reason, with the Stanford courses as a secondary option (I wouldn't bother with Kaplan).  If you do well on your IB exams, you can potentially earn a lot of credits that way.  I'm not sure that online courses would automatically benefit you the same way.  Besides, they'll want proof that you can excel in a traditional classroom setting, along with good test scores, extracurriculars, essays, and a good explanation for why you want to go there.
