  1. First you need to get into excellent physical shape and increase your upper body strength.  Do you know a Firefighter?  It would help if someone showed you what maneuvers and physical activities are included in the exam.

Some require you to carry 75lbs on your back, run up two flights of stairs and travel across a narrow ledge.  Raise a extension ladder and handle the a pressurized hose.

  2. practice handling large hoses

  3. Becoming a volunteer is a great way to get hired at a career department.  But it also depends on what part of the country you are in.  In the southeast you'll do well to put yourself through an academy, then put your applications in.

Basically, though, what you need to do is research the departments that you want to join.  Find out when they will be testing, make yourself the best possible candidate.  Get your EMT certification.

As another answer states, work on your upper body strength.  What physical agility test will your department be giving?  If it is the very popular CPAT, you will be able to find out exacty what you will have to do to pass.

This is a very competitive field.  You will want to familiarize yourself with exactly what it takes in your area.

Prepare yourself to do extremely well on a written test and then prepare for an interview.
