since we can't rent a car in montreal to drop off in Boston, we want to get from Montreal to somewhere in vermont where we can rent a car for travelling around new england

Train doesn't run from Montreal to Vermont.  You have to take the Vermont Transit bus to St. Albans and then hop the Amtrak to Montpelier.
