  1. Use M&M's or another favorite snack. For adding, you have some and the child has some... you give the child some of yours

EXP= "If you have three and I give you two of mine, how many do you have now?" Works for subtraction, too...

For multiplication you need small saucers or cups. For 4 times 3 you have four cups each containing three m&m's... have the child count all of them...

I'm not sure how well I explained it or what part of math your child is having trouble with, but that is how I taught my sister.

  2. Children that age learn math best through manipulatives. They can understand things they can touch and play with, as they have not yet developed abstract thinking skills. Mathematical concepts need to be concrete to have meaning for them. It is important to use actual objects, not virtual ones, since, again, children like to touch and play with things physically. This will engage them with the learning.

You can use beans, coins, etc. for basic addition and subtraction. Or, you can buy special products specifically designed for math. One extremely popular and widely used product is Unifix cubes. Here is their web site:

Hope this helps, and best of luck.

  3. try with toys or sweets to teach like for example have 7 sweets and say you want to give 3 friends 1 each. So how many will i have left? By placing them out on a table and moving them as if giving one to each friend it makes the concept easier to grasp. By using something that the child is interested in it makes them not lose focus as much.

  4. Hands on activities....ensure the teaching aids are colourful and playful. Integrate it in all he does, like when sharing, eating etc. Do simple to the complex

  5. Check out the Illustrated Dictionary of Math Kid Kit from Usborne Books.  It includes a great reference book with drawings and visual teaching tools, so the child will understand the reason behind the math problem, not just memorize how to do it.  The Kid Kit also contains some hands-on teaching tools that may interest him.  Good luck!

  6. money

n for every right answer u give them a nickel or dime  thats how i learned because i love money so when was taught about it i wanted to learn so i could buy things

  7. =-Role Play (if they are interested) make it about an interest of there's eg: Spiderman: how many buildings has spiderman swung on-have picture of building with webs...you can then do adding and subtracting by adding or talking away webs...shop game-prices and labels and change!

=Real life: Helping at the shops, measurement for cooking.

-DO NOT push them...the more force you use the more they'll see it as work and back away!

=Puzzles book like dot to dot and things...suduko!

    =Computer games for PC

=Speak to teachers nad see what they say as they know child better!

  8. Always use colourful concrete material such as cuisennaire rods or cubes. Why not invest in some good Maths courses such as the one used in Scotland - Heinnemann Publishing.

  9. Games

  10. Try using felt story boards. We have a number of great math/learning sets available. You can find them at http://playwithfelt.com
