Question:

Best way to arrange time for sightseeings while in London?

I will be in London for the first time (business trip) for eight days:

Sat, Sun, Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri, Sat.

Please advise how I can better use my free time (workday evenings and weekends) to visit historical places, architecture, museums, possibly theaters, anything which is worth to see for an average person. I like everything but not anything specific to be crazy about.

  1. I don't know where you will be based, but many of the famous galleries and museums have late opening days which you would be able to make use of during the week:

As you say, you can always book an evening performance at a theatre - we have plenty!

Also in the evening, you could choose a London Walk:

Depending on where you're based, you could also use a lunchtime to visit any special exhibitions in museums or galleries; or you could pick any works of art or periods to concentrate on.  If you're near Selfridges in Oxford Street, the free Wallace Collection is just behind the store in Manchester Square.  It's quite small but packed with fascinating exhibits.

You could also take a flight on the London Eye on a clear night; you might like to combine this with an early evening walk from there past the Royal Festival Hall, National Theatre, Oxo Tower, Globe Theatre, the Golden Hinde, and parts of old London ending at Borough Market (open only on Fridays and Saturdays, I think).  That's all on the South Bank.

Use the weekend days to take one of the tourist buses that take you past all the major sites.  Choose your area to see; for instance, at Westminster you could see the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey in one day.  On another day you could see St Paul's then cross the Millennium Bridge to the Tate Modern and the Globe Theatre.

Hope this will be of some help to you.

  2. we used the double decker busses and was able to get on and off at will.

Everything seems historical in London. So get a map... you can also go online and get some of the tours that they offer.

We wanted to take the Jack the ripper tour...

    good luck..
