Question:

Best way to begin studying art?

I took an art appreciation class several years ago and really enjoyed it. Art has always been something I've enjoyed, but never knew much about. I've always felt overwhelmed when I attempt to study and become familiar with art. I know some basics (characteristics of different periods, some of the most famous artists' works, etc) but I would love to go much more in depth. Does anyone have a good book or method of beginning to study art?

Thanks!

  1. If you can afford it you can always take or audit an art history class at your local community college. There should also be some good books about art at your library and you can look up stuff online (just make sure it's a reputable site). And if there's an art museum around visit it and be sure to get on a tour and learn about the paintings from the tour guide. You might want to try to find particular period or movement that interests you and focus on that, though not to the exclusion of others. The main things are have fun and keep an open mind.

  2. Go to school

  3. You might check out Simon Schama's "Power of Art" -- it was a series on art history that ran on PBS last year.  DVDs are available, and there's a book that accompanies the series, if you'd prefer to read it.  Highly recommended!

Otherwise, there are many good art historical texts out there, but many are quite large.  E. H. Gombrich's "The Story of Art" is a good beginning.
