Question:

Best way to coat handmade coasters?

Hi all,

I'm going to be making some custom drink coasters and need some advice on how to waterproof them. They will be a solid base (wood) with a layer of paper on top (for the custom art) and I need to know how to coat them so that the water obviously does not ruin the ink. Is there a sheet of something I can layer over that lasts to protect the surface? Thanks for any help.

  1. well im not sure how varnish would react on the paper...try going to your local craft and hobby shop im sure they will have just what you are in need of.

  2. Varnish would do fine. Or you could stitch a plastic sheet over it. Just remember to cover the sides too. By the way, varnish is used on papier mache, a paper handicraft product.
