Best way to get cheap hotel prices?

Should I go through priceline, travelocity etc or contact the hotel's 1-800 # or their website or call the individual hotel directly? What about those little magazines you can get in like Denny's etc with hotel coupons etc? Are they reliable? I am just needing one night but I want a nice hotel with basic amenities,
