i shoot around a 45 for 9 and low 90s for 18 and im going to be a sophomore. im 3rd in my class of 600.

i go to a pro weekly but im not sure if i should video tape my shots and look at them to see what im doing wrong because i can develop slices and hooks easily on my drives. if i consistently hit my drives well i think i could shoot around a 40. one of my friends video tapes his shots and he shoots upper 30s.

  1. Well... first you need the dedication and you need to make sure you are serious about improving. Once you have that down, if you can, you should take a lesson or two from a PGA Pro at a local golf course -- inbetween the lessons and after they are over.. practice, practice, practice. Make sure you get atleast 2 lessons because if you just go out and practice and you are trying to improve, odds are that you need help with your swing and you don't want to hit a bunch of balls if your swing is messed up.

But seriously, if you WANT to improve, you need to have the dedication and be serious about it. Trust me, you can't just go out and think its just gonna come (I know from experience). Its better to start out determined in the first place rather than not improve at all and have to go back. And PRACTICE! It really does pay off. I play on my high school golf team. You would think that with an uncle on the PGA Tour, I must understand that I need to practice more than just with the team but I didn't. I didn't finish well at state... at all. I had a bad season. So this year, I went out and I was determined to do better. I practiced all the time - either driving range, playing with my family, putting on the course or on the green in my backyard. I finished 1st at state... and had a much better season. Thats just an example of how much of a difference practicing can make.

    Anyway, 3 key concepts - determinaton/dedication... lessons... practice :)

       good luck!!!

  5. Many lessons and much practice. The best was is to analyze your golf game, chart each shot and find your weakest point. Concentrate on that phase of the game until you have attained some mastery. Then on to the next worse segment so that your game is always a work in process. Do spend most of your time on short iron shots, chips and putts for these are the scoring shots. You will find that you develop several shots through the limiting of the back swing. When you do , be sure you use the same amount of follow through.

  6. Video taping is excellent if it is available to you.  This way you can see what is really going on in your swing, and make adjustments.  By all means use video if you can, it will help your results.  You may think your left arm is straight, or that your backswing is on plane, but video tape does not lie or deceive.

  7. start practicing. you may want to take some lessons to make sure your practicing the right swing. The longer you stick with the game the better you get, especially if your a natural.

  8. If you go to your pro weekly, he should be having videos taken of you during your swings.  To be great at golf, one has to check every thing before taking the shot.  Grip, stance, ball position, ball height on tee, etc.

Work at taking a 80 percent swing, just a slight pause at the top, this will help your control during the swing.  An 80 percent swing will also increase your drive length.  Hitting the ball hard is not the point, making solid contact is what you are after.

A well planned practice schedule will help you more than just hitting balls.  Think of the first hole, set up your ball and get your target point, use your driver to hit your first shot.  Use an iron next for your second shot at about 170 yards, then use your sand wedge to chip onto green.  Keep doing this until you start to get tired.  Then go putt.
