Best way to get into Atmel AVR chips?

I’ve been using a few Basic Stamp 2 modules but there expensive and have limited resources. Id love to learn more about the Atmel AVR chips and also how to program them. Is there a good text book or something out there? Also can I make my own programmer for RS232? And can you use Windows VPL to program them I’d like to learn that to. Thanks, for any help.
