I get a kitten on Monday and I have to keep the litter box in my room.

So it can't be all stinky and stuff...... any advice would be great!

Also,if you could tell me how hard it is to train a kitten how to use the litter box..that would also be great.... thanks.

  1. Keep a good kitty litter in your cats box - fresh step is really good but you still have to keep the poo scooped up - I have mine in my bed room and every time I go to the bathroom if I notice poo I will scoop it up and flush it - Also I will used cornstarch, baking soda, or baby powders to keep any smell down.

    If you have a kitty that isn't going to the little box then take it's poo(on the poopy scooper) and take it to the litter box and let it smell it and the box put the kitten over in the box so that it can see, smell, and walk around the box and do this each time and it will come to the kitty that is where it needs to go to potty.

  2. get fer-breeze that's what i do with my 8/10 cats or get a can of good smelly stuff like Cinnamon and spray the litter box with it.

  3. It might take a while for your cat to get used to, but if you dont mind the smell of wood get one of the littlers like feline pine, if you clean it once or twice a day and change it every month you wont smell more then pine

  4. You can try to Keep Air Fresheners in the Room and Get Fresh Step That is Already Scented.

  5. I suggest using a clumping cat litter (I think my brand is "Max Cat"), and then sift out the "do" daily.  By using a clumping cat litter, you remove the urine from the box, so there is nothing to cause odor.  Don't use a dusty generic brand clumping litter, though - I'm afraid it can cause the cat respiratory problems, because they are breathing in the dust, after all, and if it's clumping, well, what will happen???  I use a paper lunch bag to put the do's in, and then take it right out to the outside garbage so it doesn't stink up the house.  I don't think you can flush clumping litter.

    Cats are very easy to train - in fact they pretty much don't need to be trained.  This reminds me of a funny story - I had a beautiful kitten named Willow, and probably the first day I got her, I was showing her the litter box.  So I pawed in it with my hand to show her what to do, and - yuck - found it was wet.  She had already used it!

    :)

    Enjoy your new kitty.

  6. I have been in your shoes. My cats are older now, but here are some things I have found over the years. The type of cat food you feed your cat dictates on how bad they smell. I switched my cats to royal canin cat food and there litter does not stink. If you don't clean it out in two weeks of course it will still smell lol. Yes it cost more money to buy royal canin, but the cats do not seem to eat as much and it is much healthier for them. Some cats have digestion issue with changing food so also keep that in consideration. Also I recommend using a hooded litter box after you are done training your cat. Kittens tend to stink when there are very young. I am not sure if it is there mother's milk that does it. But if you switch food within the month you will notice the smell dissipating. Also I have had to potty train a kitten who lost its mother. I kept putting the kitten in the litter box at different times and when the kitten went to the bath room I gave it lots of attention near the litter box. Cats are pretty instinctive and will figure it out.

  7. Layer the bottom with baking soda, to neutralize the ammonia odor that typifies the litter box, for the first thing.  We have had really good results from the covered variety of box, which also tends to keep down litter-splatter, some of which actually come with a filtering set up.  Above all, clean it at least once a day!  And it should be rinsed out at least once a week.  You can also use a spritz of Nature's Miracle in the weekly cleaning, which will neutralize the odor that you can't smell but your cat can.

    Example is the best way, as previously suggested.  If she oopsies, take a sample and put it in her litter box.  Do NOT punish her for the odd failure, just pick her up when you catch her--by the nape of the neck, just like Mom would--and deposit her in the box.  In the case of solid waste, never try to show her the error of her ways, just move it to her box and thoroughly clean the spot with an enzymatic cleanser like Nature's Miracle.  Bear in mind that cats are creatures of the Moment, so showing her the error once she's done it, is more likely to confuse than to instruct her.

    The absolute key?  Patience, patience, patience.

  8. Most kittens are already trained on the litter box before they're able to be rehomed. I've fostered many, and there was only one barely 6 week old kitten that didn't already know what to do.

    Get good cat litter, and clean/scoop the box daily.

    For just one kitten, it shouldn't stink up the room if you keep it clean.

  9. I used to have the problem of the litter box smelling so bad.

    It really comes down to the quality of litter.

    ~~~~~~~~The best cat litter I have tried is:~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Tidy Cats Scoop Small Spaces
    Make sure it says,-scoop and small spaces.
    My house no longer smells like cat poo. It clumps the pee and it clumps the poo very well.
    This is it's discription for what it is for:
    If your litter box is in a bathroom, utility room, or small apartment, it can cramp your style. But Tidy Cats Scoop Small Spaces is designed to control odor in tight places, so you can breathe easier.
    With Tidy Lock Technology, Tidy Cats Scoop Small Spaces  forms crumble-free clumps for powerful odor control and easy, clean litter box maintenance.
    You can buy this in your local petco, petsmart, target.
    Here is a picture of it, it's orange and yellow.
    Oh and you should use a something to dispose of cat litter rather than throwing the cat clumps in your kitchen disposal.
    You can try,
    Petmate Litter Locker Plus
    There are some reviews on it on the very bottom.
    Hope this helps.
  10. Once you show the kitty the cat box. It will know what to do with it.  Also do a full clean out of the cat box every month and that will keep the oder away. Use clump cat litter.  It doesn't matter what brand.
  11. well i have litter box that kind of looks like a little house..my cat goes up these little stairs and into the box.The top is closed off so the smell isnt as bad and there are fresh paper things atttached to the vents.i think my mother got this from target.We also use kitty litter that is deodorized so that eliminates some of the smell too.about the kitty training, um i dont think you have to do that. If anything put it directly into the litter box once you get home, but all of my previous cats just automatically knew to use the litter box.instincts i guess.
