Best way to label a dvd?

I've heard that the stickers that label CD's can cause problems for DVDs.

Any truth? Is there a better way?

  1. The archive professionals write on the clear space near the center hole with perm. marker.  There is not a lot of space there, but for archive longevity you do not want anything on either surface of the written part of the disc.

  2. The stickers also tend to bend the DVD slightly- not so much that you can see it, but enough to cause a problem to the laser in the player to focus on the slightly warped disc.

Buy DVDs that are inkjet- printable (you need an inkjet printer that can print on DVDs and CDs), use a sharpie pen (better: a pen specifically made for writing on CDs and DVDs) or consider investing in a DVD burner with Lightscribe technology (special DVDs required).

  3. The stickers that go on the DVD can make it hotter, faster - while it's playing in the DVD player or computer.

I would just use a good permanent maker. That's what I've been using.
