  1. Go to this site and download, free, Personal Ancestral File (PAF 5.2)

It is complete and very easy to use. You also keep it on your computer or transfer it to a re-write disk and use it from that.

  2. well you get what you paid for....

I use Legacy... They are great but not free. I think if you goto Rootsweb.com you can do a free one there.

  3. The online creation of family trees has become increasingly popular. There are a wide variety of family tree makers on the Web.

GEDCOM (Genealogy Data Communication) enables you to take your family tree and convert it to text format, thus enabling you to share your family tree information with other genealogists and upload any GEDCOM family tree to the family tree software of your choice. It was meant to create a uniform format for exchanging genealogical data to assist with genealogy research. For details browse:

  4. At familysearch.org you can download free family tree software.  I use it and have no complaints. Its called Personal Ancestry File software (PAF5).

  5. For all those who are serious, don't waste time with those programs.

All you need is Word or some other word processing program.  Type everything in.  I say this because unless you get tired of it, you will have way too much to use one of those programs.  I use one when I started out; when I tried to print it out the last time, my computer crashed! The time before that when I printed out the tree, it was too much for my living room wall!
