My mother an I moving to a new apartment 3 hours from where I am currently living. I've already had to move several times previously and my cat always adjusted fine to the new home. But he mewls and cries in the car the entire way. I had always used a cat crate to move him but he seems more comfortable to just sit on my lap, Or I've used the clothing handle in the backseat to attach his leash and give him room to move back there. He never caused problems when on the leash. Is this safe for him to sit up in the front seat with me? Or have him in the back?Suggestions?

  1. If your cat is comfortable with it then it should be okay. Make sure it is securely fastened though at all times. My cat hates car rides he will meow and cry also.

  2. It isnt safe for him to be outside of the pet carrier. Despite his mewing you need to keep him in there for his own safety. Put a towel on the bottom so he has something soft and that smells like you to lay on and maybe it'll calm him down..

  3. Sure, it should be fine to let your cat sit in your lap if he is more comfortable there. Take the crate and put in the backseat, though. You need to crate him before you leave the car to go to the restroom. Its way too easy for him to jump out when the door is opened.

Edited: Let me retract my answer. I think the posters below me are right. The cat could wander or something could happen.

  4. I wouldn't let the baby ride up front with you, in your lap or otherwise.  He can get to roaming, get under the driver's feet, and cause a wreck.  I would keep him in the carrier and then when you stop for a break, you can always pet and play with him then.

  5. I'd say it's better in the back, because you never know about the air bag and stuff.
