Best way to preserve VHS tapes digitally?

I have big library of old VHS football tapes. I want to preserve them digitally. Any idea the best way to keep them safe with best picture quality? Top of mind:

- DVD recorder sounds great. But, DVDs are so easy to scratch.

- Record them digitally? but I don't think picture quality will be good. Best way to do that?

You could try buying an archos player, its a bit like an i pod but you can record direct from an audio/video output so your vhs player should be ideal im pretty sure you will then be able to transfer it onto your hard drive with the software included check out their web site for all the technical stuff just to make sure its what you need
