My son's pillowcases have this odor that I can't seem to get rid of?

I've washed them in Borax, vinegar, hung them outside in the sun, Clorox for colors, etc.

All the sheet sets of his have this....it's not limited to one sheet set.

I've replace his pillows too.

How do hotels deal with this problem?

  1. Try using a cup of amonia, of course do not mix it with bleach or vinegar, just add with your detergent. My daughter's worked fast food; after washing their uniforms they used to still smell of french fry grease. The amonia did the trick.

  2. You have to buy new ones.  The odor comes from ear wax and hair oils and there is only so much you can do to remove it.  There are products to reduce ear wax if he has excessive amounts. If his pillow case is yellowed, then it is a wax problem.  Talk to your pharmacist.

  3. Hotel's only use white COTTON  sheets because they are constantly washed in very hot water with bleach.  They do not use fabric softener or dryer sheets as these products will eventually cause build up and make the fabric more prone to absorbing body oils. Polyester or polyester blended fabric sheets are not used because body oils are hard to remove from synthetic fabrics.
