Question:

Best way to remove unwanted house paint from utility boxes?

Electric Power box is gray metal. I want to repaint/detail it. Cable box is plastic. I would also like to remove traces of house paint from aluminum storm window frames and drip flashing at roof edge.

Any suggestions about how to do this effectively? The house will look a lot neater detailed this way. Looks a little sloppily done in areas.

  1. You'll be able to find a primer for both plastic and metal, but you'll have to sand lightly before priming and painting.

If your drip, storm window frames and roof edge are pianted, you'll have a hard time taking off the paint, might as well repaint on top for as far as the drip and flashing are concerned, you'll most likely dammage the aluminium finish. I don't know if you're near the ocean, but if you take off the original finish of the aluminium, you'll have to change it altogether in a few years. Prime and paint over them with an oil base paint would be the best bet.

While you wait for the coats to dry, put your brush filled with oil paint in a plastic bag and leave it in the freezer. 1/2 hr before doing another coat, take it out and place it in the sun, it'll be fresh as the day before
