i always say hey

but it depends who youre talking to really

if youre talking to an adult or someone older than you you should say hello

but when talking to someone you know well or someone your age you can say hey or hi

I only use hello on the phone. I use hi and hey when I see people outside.

Hello or hi both sound fine to me. Why draw unnecessary attention to yourself from the first instant?

To me, "hello" is the most 'universal':  not too casual, seems appropriate.
