Well I have a long lost sistere that was put up for adoption 18 years ago. I have her DOB, SS#, Birth name, and the adoption agency. All of the on-line "detective or search" agencys seem kinda like a scam, and I don't feel comfortable using them. Does anyone know the best way to handle this situation with the info that i have. Or if anyone has been in a similar siuation could u please help me out.

Thanks in advance for anyone who gives me any info! Thanks again.

  1. If you know her current name, I would suggest looking through facebook, classmates, and myspace since she is 18.  Otherwise, I would also look into the various registries for matching information.

  2. Your skepticism in the on-line search agencies is well-founded. You even have to be careful of the legitimate search registries because some of the for-profit search agencies have obtained remarkably similar domain names. In addition, the for-profit agencies seem to scour the search postings and will then contact you by phone. This happened to me last week just days after the first time I ever tried searching.  International Locator [aka Adoption Family Network] wanted almost $2000 to do a search and I would be limited to 3 conversations per month with the private investigator.

Best advice right now: go to www.isrr.net  [be sure you don't end up at the isrr.COM site; it's a rip-off] and download the forms to fill out and mail back to them. This seems to be the most comprehensive and legitimate site out there and is highly recommended by all of the other adoption search sites. They should also have links to legit search sites for your state and/or the adoption agency.

  3. contact the adoption agency

  4. You could check the National Adoption Registry to see if anyone matching your info is searching as well.  You could also look at hiring a Private Investigator.  It may be a little expensive but you don't run the risk of leaving the info on the internet.  Also, if it was an adoption they might have changed her name and SS# at the time of the adoption.  Without more info as to the circumstances I can't give you any more ideas but if you want to email me with more I might be able to come up with more for ya.  Best of luck!

  5. I was in the same situation, the way I found my sister was calling the adoption agency.  They sent both me and my sister a form to fill out to ok the exchange of information, then notified us of each others phone number. The whole process took less than a month.  Good luck and I hope you find what you are looking for.
