  1. Listen to plain jane.  She has some excellent suggestions.


  2. Acoustical insulation: it comes in rolls ("batts"), just like thermal insulation, but is specifically for sound-deadening. Measure the depth of your ceiling joists (probably 8", maybe 6") and get the appropriately-sized (thickness) of ACOUSTICAL insulation. After you staple the insulation in place, drywall the ceiling OR put up 12" x 12" acoustical tile. Even better: put up drywall first, then glue and staple acoustical tile to the drywall ceiling.

    IF acoustical insulation isn't available --but only IF-- then install thermal insulation "batts" instead. It's not as efficient but is better than nothing.
