i plan to study business at uni. i hope to start a business a long way down the track, but obviously i need to gain experience and start gaining connections first. what should i focus on at university/college, like marketing or something? should i enter into a part-time internship straight away while studying?

  1. you really need to know what type of business you would like to run. Then get work in a similar existing business. That allows you to see how things are run and gets you familiar with the processes.

If you study business at uni they usually make you do marketing/accounting/economics anyway, so decide what type of business you want to decide which major you will do.

But really, uni won't help you a whole lot, first hand experience will. As someone with a degree, I can tell you that knowing theories doesn't help you in the real world.

  2. I suggest you call up people in the work that you want to do and ask them what is the best they could suggest.  I say this because they know what is really happening in the business world right now and where it is going.

  3. This is something for you to develop perhaps after the first term in uni.
