Question:

Best way to tell my son he's going to be a big brother?

...he used to ask all the time when he could have a baby brother - he gave up about 2 years ago (he's 9)

BUT...now it's going to happen :) I'm nervous to tell him, but don't want to put it off too much longer. Right now he's in Texas visiting his dad, he's due back next wednesday.

Should I tell him by myself? or should his step dad be there too (they are close)...how long should I give him to "decompress" after visiting his dad before I tell him...

thank you!!

  1. I think the step-dad should be in on it also, especially since they have a good relationship. He is going to know something is going on, so I would tell him within a day or so so he isn't worried that something is wrong.

  2. u have to tell him and sit down as family then tell him

  3. Well since your son is also close to your husband I think it would be a good idea to either go out to a nice restaurant or make his favorite meal at home with both of you there to give him the news. I don't think that he'll need time to decompress, just tell him right away, I'm sure he'll be excited!

    Congrats on the pregnancy!

  4. Well, it is a family event and so the family should be involved especially if they are close.

Be matter of fact and excited...it is good news right? I will bet he will be thrilled.

If you want to go cutsie maybe buy like a babys first bat (or some sport or activity that your son is intrested in) and let him open it and see if he catches on, if he doesn't then tell him it is so he can teach his new brother or sister.  Or a book to read to his little brother or sister.

As to the decompress thing...you know your son best so that is a call only you and his step dad can make.

  5. The whole family will be effected by your new bundle of joy, so I would have his step-dad there too.  And I am sure he still wants a baby brother, but just does not voice his oppinions anymore because he did for so long, with no results.  My guess is that he will be extremely excited.  Make sure you tell him all the fun things that he will be able to do with his baby brother.

As far as decompressing.  I'd give it a few days.  You never know kids...lol.  Let him wind back down and get into his groove at your home, and then maybe make his favorite meal, or order in from his favorite restaraunt, or pizza and tell him that way.  Good luck!!!  I am sure he will be happy!!
