I am 21 years old and one of my goals for my life is to successfully run a marathon. Does anyone have any advise on a training routine and how long one normally needs to prepare for something like this??

Thanks!!

  1. I think the best training plans are the "Hal Higdon" plans. If you are a complete non-runner, you need at least 2-3 months of gradually increasing distance & frequency. Once you can comfortably run 3 miles at a time 2 days a week and a little more on the weekend, you should sign up for a 10k race. A week or 2 later, start your 18 week "novice" program as outlined by Higdon. A great alternative would be to join a "Team in Training" where you will get a group to train with as well as coaching advice.

As far as choosing a race, the Chicago Marathon is always one of the best for beginners. Walt Disney World is fun, but the heat & humidity can get to you (it did me!!)

  2. you should probably go buy yourself some good running shoes then run 1 mile if it is easy good then make it 2 and then 3 etc. This will take a maybe 2 years if you want to be good i know because i run about 2 miles a day

  3. The training program is 18 weeks; but you need to be in pretty good shape to start it.  So if you are not already in good shape, you need 3-6 months of working out regularly to be able to withstand the difficulty of the program.  Here is a guide to running your first marathon, written by a team of writers who run marathons.
