  1. I do  railway  trips  around  Europe  at least  once  a  year.  The  best  site  to  organise  your  trip  is  www.seat61.com,  I don't  recommend  any of  the  rail passes  or  country  passes,  too  expensive  and  you will miss the  fun!

if  you  want to  travel  during  the  day  and  want to  check  the  timetables  then  just  put  in  google "train in  Italy" example  or  use  www.pkp.pl   ,where  you  can  get  the  timetable of  every train  station in Europe. Have  fun!!!

  2. Yeah interrail if you're from Europe and eurrail if you are from elsewhere.

Went around Europe for a month with an interrail ticket. Good fun and not too much hassle. You may have to pay an extra fee to guarantee seats on some trains but it isn't that expensive.

  3. Look into  buying a Eurail pass. They can be used for rail travel throughout most of Europe. I think the minimum is 15 days and pass is good for that time from first day of use. Also gives you discounts on sightseeing, food, rooms, ferrys, etc.

Cannot buy there-must purchase before leaving USA

  4. It depends on how much travel you are going to do. Generally, if you are moving from city to city every couple of days, you'll be better off with an inter-rail ticket. Otherwise you might be better off buying train tickets from train stations as you go along.

As previous respondents have said, if you are European, you can buy an Inter-rail ticket from any country participating in the scheme. Otherwise you have to a Eurrail tickets from the country of your residence.

  5. Kayla is right - Interrail is for residents here in Europe, Eurail is for others. However, it is often cheaper to get point-to-point tickets. You will have to pay supplements on the faster trains - here in Italy it's 5 euro per train for an intercity train and 15 or 20 euro for the Eurostar and Alta Velocita trains. Night trains also have supplements. The passes are better if you stick to the slower regional trains that may require multiple train changes to may require multiple train changes.

There are often saver fares available if you buy point to point tickets at least a day in advance. For example, right now, you can get individual tickets from Berlin to Amsterdam for 39 euro.
