Best way to travel from Chennai to Karaikal?

I want to go to Karaikal from Chennai and come back, if possible, on the same day. Are there trains? If not, what is the nearest train station? How long it will take to go by train? Are there direct buses? How long it will take?

i know there are trains from  Karaikal from Chennai and back again. but i do not know how long it will take, where train stations are. but i do know that there are buses from each city going to other cities. i just dont know if there is a bus from Karaikal from Chennai. hope this helps,
