Best ways to bet for horse racing?

i recently got in to horse racing and i was think of betting by a couple of different methods. one was to pick the team that had the best jockey and trainer, another was to wait till the last minute until betting stops and put money on the best odds. are these ideas any good? any other ideas would be greatly appreciated. thanks :)

The best way to bet in on an e/w bet.  You bet the horse to WIN, come 2nd or 3rd.  The payouts are lower but odds are better.

A parlay bet where you bet the exact horses to come in 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the right order will pay nicely.
