We have to make bunk boards for our boat trailer. The boat is aluminium and we worry that pt lumber would corrode the metal but we want something that will last.

  1. Expect to change bunk boards.

Swap to rollers for permanent solution.

Otherwise I would use Douglas Fir or

SOUTHERN Yellow pine.   Just stain with redwood or cheap stuff and then carpet it.

your not going to get anymore out of it than you do now.

If you use pt , seal it or paint it. then carpet it.  pt means it will last a year before you paint or seal it. you have to treat all wood at some point.

  2. just use carpeted PT 2x4's

  3. If you live in the south, then cypress lumber is available to use. Just cover it with carpet and it will last the life of the boat. If not from the south, you have no choice but treated lumber, or replace on a regular basis.

  4. Cedar is a natural alternative to PT lumber. It's a little more expensive but lasts longer and doesn't contain the chemicals that PT lumber does. Make sure to cover it in a quality marine or outdoor carpet.

  5. Use PT and cover with carpet. That  is how they all are done.

  6. White Oak Bunks carpeted..  or cedar

    (NO rollers)

  7. Use the plastic composite board that is used in the new decking. Cover it with outdoor carpet and change it when it needs it.
