  1. Yeah, strength matters, not height.

  2. I'm with Furry Guy, but would add quick thinking and ability to maintain focus or block out pain. Ive lost a few hand on hands where I had height or strength advantages and won a few where I was the underdog.

  3. I'm with you, strength over height.

  4. I would side with you. There is a reason why we ladies are not trying for the Navy SEALs, but short guys are.

Furry Guy, I would say that while in modern warfare strength and height are less necessary than ancient times, I would argue that they, particularly strength, remain important. I've had to carry loads on my back and pieces of crew-served weapons. They're darn heavy. I still give you a thumbs up.

    :-D

Edit: Ah, so you aren't talking about modern warfare? Well... Furry Guy might be spot on then. Check out Morihei Ueshiba's amazing feats.

  5. Very interesting answers. I served in the Navy, and at times I had to carry heavy communications equipment and machinery. And it had nothing to do with my height (since the average woman is about 5'5), but it had everything to do with my cardio vascular and muscular endurance. My ability to move heavy objects (or people) within a certain distance before physical energy exertion is depleted.

Now in combat, if you have a combination of height, strength, and skill, then I pitty the man or woman that dare challenge you to a dual. I also tried my hand at boxing after boot camp, and one thing I learned while sparing is that the opponent with the longest reach was usually the victor. Now, I have seen cases where the shorter spit-fire squid or devil-dog would win, but he or she was very skilled and was able to maneuver well in the ring (quick and light on their feet). So it's mainly based on a person's physical health (cardio and muscular), their skill, and mind set.

The deal with your husband not wanting to get up and help with the baby is something that goes far beyond who's able to handle their own in combat. That's a compromise that the two of you are going to have to reach, and has nothing to do with who's stronger or better at hand to hand combat.

  6. actually NEITHER height nor strength matter MUCH in fighting.

what matters most in fighting are the following:

    1. conditioning (cardiovascular fitness and endurance mainly)

    2. skill

    3. heart and a slight touch of craziness

  7. yeah, height has nothing to do with it.

my best friend is in the Army right now 5'3 and kicks major a$$!!

looks like your hubby is going to be tired in the mornings ;)

  8. He does have longer arms, than you do. But winner is always a faster and a stronger fighter, not the tallest one. Why would you be fighting with your husband anyway?  I personally prefer making love instead... This way, we both can be winners at the same time.

  9. Reach is a distinct advantage in boxing and striking disciplines,

Strength is an advantage in grappling disciplines such as Judo or wrestling.

    What type of fight?
