Betfair Pall Mall Final- Ballymac Ace and Brittons Empire run for Chris Allsopp among other competitive runners
Oxford is all set to host the Betfair Pall Mall Final on Tuesday, the 28th of June, 2011, to a field of six greyhounds, including reigning champ, Ballymac Ace, Brittons Empire, Buzz Doc, Pams Tomjo, Aherlow Shaw and Dromana Max.
We shed some light on the prolific racing careers of these star hounds to give us a better guess as to who will shine the brightest on Tuesday night.
Running from Trap 1 will be last year’s winner, 7/4 Ballymac Ace, who is determined to defend his title.
The son of Ballymac Mir displayed a good show in the semifinals and stood second only to Pams Tomjo.
Thanks to his great speed and Chris Allsopp’s training, this hound looks like a good competitor, but it has been twelve months since he last won the Betfair Pall Mall Final. Last week he lost to Pams Tomjo, so one cannot predict accurately what the fate
of this flying hound will be.
Another Chris Allsopp entrant in the race is Derby heat winner, 7/2 Brittons Empire.
He performs better when he leads early on in the race like he did in the semifinal and being on the inside surely improves the cha.
He gave another stellar performance at the Derby by beating rival Express Shuttle and Allsopp hopes to see a glimpse of that run again at this final.
From trap 3, John Mullins’ competitive 8/1 Buzz Doc will take his start.
She is the 2008 daughter of Droopys Maldini and Clemmas Destiny. She has had an impressive career so far, making it to the quarterfinals of the Derby and ending up as the runner-up in the Oxfordshire Stakes this February.
One thing is for sure though, the way she challenged Dromana Max at the semifinal is an assuring sign of what a great fight she can put up.
Brian Clemenson’s unbeaten 4/1 Pams Tomjo will run from trap 4. Like Britton’s Empire, he too performs better when he leads early on in the race.
In a career spanning merely fifteen races, he has won ten races already. In this year’s Betfair Pall Mall, he has yet to see defeat, but one cannot be too sure as he has never faced a race as major as this before.
If he wins, this will be Clemenson’s third Betfair Pall Mall victory.
Heat 2 winner from the semifinal, 4/1 Aherlow Shaw, will run from trap 5 on Tuesday. Even though he started slow in the semifinal, he took the lead at the last bend and beat Brittons Empire to win, showing that he does not need to take the initial lead in
order to win.
Earlier on in his career, Shaw won at Hall Green and Wimbledon and then reached the semifinal of the Midland Puppy Derby.
Before the start of Betfair Pall Mall he did not seem to be in great form but that notion has been dispelled after his performance in the semifinal.
The final contestant will be Lynn Cook’s 8/1 Dromana Max from Trap 6. He has also run a mere fifteen races, out of which he has won eight in Nottingham.
Despite his lack of experience, he seems likely to win given his past record.
On 26th April, 2011, he broke the Poole 450m track record at Dave Lawrence Golden Crest at Dorset and could surprise spectators with such a performance yet again.
Indeed only one hound will emerge victorious but in a field of such strong runners, it is difficult to predict who will emerge victorious.
For these hounds, coming this far is also a major feat, so regardless of the results on Tuesday night, all these hounds should be appreciated for their talent and perseverance.
