Betfair becomes official sponsor of World Snooker European Tour this season
Snooker governing body, the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) announced the addition of new snooker events in the 2012-13 Snooker Season calendar which was a good initiative as far as the popularity of the game is concerned. The
snooker fans across the globe appreciated and welcomed the decision of adding more snooker events in the calendar so that they can have more snooker fun all year.
The decision was not admired by some major names like the four-time World Snooker Championship winner, Scotland’s John Higgins and the reigning World Snooker Champion, England’s Ronnie O’Sullivan who thought that the increased number of events will compel
the players to stay away from their home. However, as obvious, the sponsors of the game would be quite delighted to have as many snooker events as they can so that they can advertise themselves.
Following the trend, one of the major betting ventures online, Betfair, will be sponsoring the World Snooker European Tour events in the current snooker season. The European Tour contains six events which will be commenced from late August.
While speaking to World Snooker, Chairman Barry Hearn said, “We are delighted to bring in Betfair as the sponsor of the European Tour. Just like us, they are targeting emerging markets in many areas of Europe, and this tour will provide tremendous exposure
for their brand. Each of these events will receive extensive television coverage from Eurosport and the viewing figures are phenomenal.”
He added, “We are extremely excited about the potential snooker has on the continent in the coming years.”
The agreement between World Snooker and Betfair was signed recently according to which, Betfair will be sponsoring following events:
Paul Hunter Classic at Furth in Germany August 23-26
Gydnia Open at Gdynia in Poland, October 5-7
Belgian Open at Antwerp in Belgium, October 19-21
Bulgarian Open at Sofia in Bulgaria, November 16-18
Scottish Open at Ravenscraig in Scotland, December 14-16
Munich Open at Munich in Germany, January 4-6
It will be exciting to see what impact these new events will have on the snooker calendar as the fans look to their favourite players during the new season.
