Beth Allen: Europeans deserved to win 2012 Ryder Cup
American Beth Allen, who mostly plays on the LET (Ladies European Tour), has said that she watched the Ryder Cup 2012 with great interest but liked how Europeans carved out a victory from
her fellow Americans.
Speaking to the LET during one of her recent interviews, Allen said that she was in Europe during the 2012 Ryder Cup, but she made certain she watched every single shot of the most prestigious
men’s golf tournament.
“I watched the Ryder Cup with my friend Jenny who caddies for me sometimes,” said Allen who made the headlines last year after she reportedly donated her kidney to her brother.
When asked what she thinks had helped the European contenders inflict a defeat on Americans, Allen said that both the teams played well and looked in the best form, but what really made a
difference in the match was Americans’ mistakes in the final moments, which let Europeans walk away with the title on American soil.
“I think the Americans helped them out a bit, they maybe got nervous and could it been a little bit of a gift”.
The LET star said that it was certainly a nerve-racking match as both the teams frantically looked for points so they could bring their rivals under pressure. She said that Europeans looked
much better when it came to nerves as they were mentally strong on that particular day (final match) despite the fact that the crowd support was in favour of Americans.
Nicolas Colsaerts, who belongs to Belgium, displayed an explosive performance at the 2012 Ryder Cup, helping his team lift the coveted trophy after a nerve-jangling battle against American
foes.
Allen also appeared to be heavily inspired by what Colsaerts did in the first round at Medinah Country Clun, Medinah, Illinois, United States.
For obvious reasons, Allen rooted for her national side but there were only a few players whom she was impressed with. The LET titan said that watching the national team lose the match was
horrible, but pointing out mistakes and fixing them in order to improve is also important.
She said she felt sorry for Phil Mickelson, who despite putting his best foot forward, lost in a single match. She said Mickelson was in a strong position, but lost his momentum in the final
moments as European Justin Rose outrivaled him.
Former world number one Tiger Woods, who ruled men’s golf before getting mired in scandal and injury issues last year, faltered in all matches, not being able to notch a single point.
“I thought that Stricker would do better in the singles...he missed a lot of short putts that he usually makes and same with Furyk...I think Davis Love III put them on those spots because
he thought they were reliable and they were not....so that it why I think they were really disappointing,” Allen said.
