Bethanie Mattek-Sands pulls out from the Sony Ericsson Open 2012 – Tennis News
American tennis star, Bethanie Mattek-Sands, withdrew from the Sony Ericsson Open 2012 after sustaining a lower back injury. She is planning to skip the upcoming WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Mandatory event taking place on the hard courts at
Key Biscayne in Miami, Florida.
The Lady Gaga of tennis, Mattek-Sands, is planning to skip few of the upcoming tournaments including the Sony Ericsson Open after bearing the low back injury.
“Really sad I have to withdraw from the next few tournaments. Not exactly sure when I'll be back but I HAVE to get my hip/back injury better,” the highly enthusiastic American stated in a social networking site on Thursday.
Mattek-Sands had a monotonous ongoing season. She started her campaign standing at 56th rank in the WTA rankings at Moorilla Hobart International, a hard court tournament held in the second week of January. The American dumped the local wild card
entrant, Ashleigh Barty, in straight sets in the opening round. However, she fell to Romania’s Sorana Cirstea in gruelling three sets in the follow-up round.
She carried her losing ways into the Australian Open, first of the four Grand Slam event, and crashed out to the Polish number one, Agnieszka Radwanska, in the opening round.
Currently ranked 75th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Mattek-Sands then re-ignited her last year’s spark at the Paris WTA Premier event and went on a four-game winning streak before bowing out to seventh seeded Roberta Vinci in the second round.
She outclassed her opponents including the qualifying ninth seed, Jill Craybas, to enter the main draw at this event.
However, the 26-year-old lost her track again at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells and exited from the opening round. She lost to Ekaterina Makarova, who recently stunned Serena Williams at the Melbourne Grand Slam, in straight sets to exit from the tournament
with disappointment.
The American was looking forward to recreate her old magic at the Tennis Center at Crandon Park and was aiming to improve her rankings. However, her plans went down the drain after she endured the low back injury. As a result, she will move down further
at the WTA rankings.
