Bethanie Mattek-Sands says she is back in perfect physical condition – Tennis News
Former Top-30 player, Bethanie Mattek-Sands of USA, has shared that she has regained match fitness and is raring to go in the next season.
The American player suffered pretty badly due to multiple injuries during 2012. She could not take part in many tournaments and did not perform well in the ones she managed to participate. Mattek-Sands' world ranking dropped to 173rd position
after this terrible season.
However, she is saying that she is feeling very good now, being in the best physical condition for a long time.
She said, "Physically I'm feeling the best I've had in a long time. It's the first time in a long time I wake up and I feel good, and that's exciting."
Mattek-Sands is currently featuring in the wild card playoff for the first Grand Slam of the season, the Australian Open. Eight American women and the same number of men are trying their luck in this event that will end on Sunday.
Currently ranked 169th in the world, the American player will take on Mallory Burdette, Julia Cohen, Irina Falconi, Alexa Glatch, Alison Riske, Madison Keys and Grace Min during the event. Min won the 2011 US Open juniors title and Keys was the
winner of last year’s wild card playoff competition. Other players in the draw are young and little known.
Mattek-Sands added, "It's good for U.S. tennis that so many girls are in the top 100 and so many that are close. It's going to be tough competition."
If the American player succeeds in winning this competition, she would not only qualify for the Australian Open but she would also be able to participate in a WTA warm up event.
She went on to say, "I know I'm confident in my game. I just feel like I'm not finished. There are so many goals I haven't reached, and I'm feeling the best I've had in a long time. I want the wild card."
Mattek-Sands lost to Romania’s Sorana Cirstea in the second round of the Moorilla Hobart International and at the hands of Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland in her opening match at the Australian Open this year.
