Futsal is a form of indoor football which is now played in more than 100 countries. The game is played with a special low-bounce ball. Futsal got its origin from Brazil, where it was played on the streets of most major cities. The first Futsal championship
was held in 1971 in Brazil. The tournament was conducted under the supervision of the Brazilian Football Federation. In 1989 Futsal got recognition from FIFA and since then the Futsal World Championship is held under the guidance of FIFA.
The Bethel College Futsal team won the United States Futsal Federation Regional Championship earlier is February. The team coach Pinto said, “We won a very competitive tournament in great fashion and now our guys look forward to April 10-11 when they will
show the world that they love playing the game.” The boys are preparing for the final attempt as they are hopeful to break the Brazilian World record.
The record set by the Brazilians will not be easy to break. An earlier attempt in 2010, the Middlesbrough Futsal Club played against Teesside University in a Futsal marathon attempted to break the record. The match was played at Thornaby Pavilion on 8th
October 2010. The main aim of the unsuccessful attempt was to raise money for kids. The two teams were unable to break the record set by the Brazilians. They were supposed to play for 48 hours but the teams fell short by a large margin.
The Bethel College team hopes to far exceed the results of their predecessors and bring the record to North America.
