Question:

Betta Tank questions . . . ?

For over a year, I have had two bettas each in a tank like so:

. . . But I was thinking about getting two more bettas. Rather than having 4 tanks, I thought of getting a dual tank like this:

I definitely think the tank is better than the cups bettas are sold in, but is that even big enough? Also, is it safe to keep bettas right next to one another like that?

Thanks in advance.

  1. I would not get the dual tank, it is way too small for 2 bettas. I work at Petco and have seen both of these products in person. It is fine to keep bettas next to each other. The tanks that you have are ok, as long as they are not the mini size (too small for any fish to be happy and healthy because the limited space will stunt their growth, causing a shorter life).

If you can, it would be better for your fish if you get tanks with filters like these

I have used all of these and they work great.

  2. im sorry but no=[ the tnaks you have them in now are too small. the truth is bettas are tropical, requireing temps in the high 70s to low 80s. if i were you id REALLY consider 2 divided 10g tanks..... well good luck!!=]

  3. ya its safe, and the tanks def big enough.

  4. it's probably fine but if there fighting fish you have to put them in separate tanks.

  5. yeah that seems fine

i would buy 2 and stack them

    and have 4 bettas

    and sell your old tanks

also drill very small holes in the divider so you only need 2 heaters and 2 filters for 4 bettas

  6. No, that is nowhere near big enough. Not even for one betta. Even the one you currently have is a bit on the small side.

It's extremely cramped - bettas do best with lots of space. You'd need to stay on top of water changes like a hawk (small space + two adult bettas pooping = dirty water fast). The water would need to be changed daily. It looks roughly half a gallon, maybe 1. They could easily get sick or be harmed by ammonia levels pretty quick.

Also, "When in close proximity, bettas become stimulated to intensify their color, spread their fins, and flare their gills" is something you don't want happening all of the time. It is good for them to flare and see other bettas, but not constantly, which is what will happen (the divider looks transparent in the picture). Flaring shouldn't last more than ten minutes a day, otherwise the fish will over exert itself and/or become stressed. The stacking idea is bad, too, since it'll limit the air flow. Tanks like that are gimmicks with no thought for the actual fish's welfare in mind. Please don't get it.

The smallest I'd recommend dividing a tank is 4 gallons. Always have a solid divider, so they don't see each other all of the time.

  7. Those are too small despite the fact that those tiny tanks are made for bettas. A minimum of 2.5 gallon with a filter and heater is much better for your betta, anyone that moved their betta from those tiny tanks to a 2.5 gallon with a heater and a filter will tell you how much happier their betta seemed after moving the betta.
