  1. Bettas do not need a filter as long as you change the water regularly, make sure the water doesn't look too dirty. The tanks I've seen that are made for Bettas don't have filters. Bettas also actually enjoy living in small environments so do not keep him or her in a big tank. I had a Betta that lived in a small tank with out a filter for about 3 years which is the normal life span for a Betta. So I don't think you need the filter. Oh and just a tip, DO NOT put another betta in the same tank because if they are both males they will fight each other. Good luck!

  2. Bettas can survivie without a filter, but will be more healthier with one. The filter may be to strong for the betta, because they are not the strongest swimmers against water current. My betta used to get sucked into my old filter until I got a new one...

  3. if the tank is a mini tank (3gal or less), a filter is not really necessary and not really that helpfull since a tank that small is not able to sustain a nitrogen cycle. And it is normal for bettas to attack objects in their tanks that they are not familiar with. Change the water weekly, DO NOT wait untill the tank looks dirty, it can look perfectly crystal clear and still be filthy and unhealthy.

good betta website to learn about betta care:

    http://www.bettatalk.com

    http://www.bettysplendens.com

  4. bettatalk.com  BEST website for bettas.

filters are unnecessary & can actually cause stress on the betta if its too strong or if it can't get away from the flow.

so long as you do 1/4 to 1/2 water changes every week you should be good.  (let the water sit out overnight to eliminate the chlorine & come to room temp.  Bottle water doesnt have the minerals they need)

*one more note. They can SURVIVE in small tanks, but prefer at least 2.5 gallons of water to THRIVE.

bettas come to the surface for air.

get that baby some brine shrimp... and dont overfeed it EVER. Just 3-4 peices is plenty.... and it helps digestion to skip a day once a week or so.  (I lost a betta because it got a blockage in its bowels)

if the betta has the long pretty fins then its a male.  females have regular short fins.

Get a plant for him to rest on too.... they like to lounge.

If it starts to blow bubbles at the top of the tank that means its a happy fish... (dual meaning... happy as in comfterbal and happy as in it wants to mate)

  5. bettas can live without the filter but with out it you will need to do way more cleaning then with out one good luck

  6. When I was a kid, I had one I fed once a week, and it survived off of whatever algae grew in the bowl. Just add water!

  7. I don't know about your actual question, but I know that if your Betta is colorful it's a male :)
