if my male is about 2 years old including the time in the pet store is he too old to breed? and also is it normal for males to not have bubble nest when with a female?

i have a 10 gallon tank but i plan to get a 5 gallon or 8 for the fry since i have angel fishs in the 10 gallon tank and i dont think i should get rid of them since i had them for 8 years

i am currently having the boy and girl in a tank and i am going to add a styrofoam cup but does that do anything?

  1. Two years is not too old for breeding the male must not be intersted if he is not makeing a bubble nest.

Be sure the tank you put the bettas fry in they can not get sucked in the filter.

  2. you really should have done alot of research before hand Ill link you to some places....to answer your question the cup gives him something to put his bubble nest next to...

  3. angel fish in a 10g tank was tha bout then

  4. 2 years is too old to breed a betta.  The prime breeding time for bettas is when they are under 1 year and after they have reached sexual maturity.  After that, as they get older the liklihood that the fry produced will be malformed increases exponentially.  Meaning fewer good and viable fry and more you have to cull.

Males and females should not be in the same tank untill both are conditioned to breed and show signs of intrest.  This means the female is displaying horizontal barring and is full of eggs and the male has a bubble nest already built.  Both should be kept seperate while the male courts the female.  Once both are ready you may release the female and breeding should occur shortly.  Once the female has expelled her eggs you need to remove her and let the male attend to the eggs and fry untill they are free swimming  which is when you should remove him too.

If you want to get into breeding fish that are not live bearers, you should really look into it a bit more, especially with a species as complex as a betta.

  5. actually that IS too old, but that is fine if you want to go ahead and try it and get a bunch of deformed and handicapped fish while you are at it (if you even get them to spawn at that age).

and btw,  bettas need a 30-50gal grow out tank with heat and filtration and you need some 50+ jars for when you have to seperate the males. You cant keep the fry in a 10gal, that is just for breeding and for the first few weeks. AND you need to condition the male, the styrofoam cup does not do anything to encourage breeding (i guess you know this since you "researched" right???..........)
