  1. In the wild Betta's live in small (tea cup size) puddles of water or even mud and breathe air like we do and absorb it in to their lungs/gills. They do very well in tanks and as well in med. - large bowls. They are beautiful fish and should be presented as such. Now they also live in murky rice fields and I hear they get stepped on quite often and the breed always does well.

  2. I have a Betta and he's really a happy fish with a great personality.  I got him one of those tanks from walmart with the air pump.  It's about 1 gallon maybe a little more.  I change the water every two weeks. Be sure to use Top Fin conditioner and Seri-Clean or Aqua-Clean.  I, also use accents stones and river rocks instead of gravel.  I change the accent stones often for different effects.  They look like glass shiny stones and come in many shapes.  You can get them in the fish department at Walmart, but I recommend the crafts department at Walmart they have a better variety and you get more for your money. Make sure you soak them in hot water and seri-clean first. Don't use any saltwater decor., such as shells. These are not tolerated by Beta's.  Don't forget to use flakes with color enhancers, along with pellets and as a treat once a month give him freeze dried blood worm.  Don't over feed and follow directions carefully on everything.  Your smart to want to make a better life for you Beta.  He really is dreaming of a bigger home. soon your Beta will have personality too!

Good Luck and I hope this helped.

  3. Yeah I've noticed that.  I used Bettas in an experiment before (they weren't hurt) and it was SO hard to find healthy ones!  They're kept in tiny containers where they can't even move.  The same is true for feeder fish.  Yeah they're destined to die by being eaten by something else, but the conditions are so disgusting!  You always see a bunch getting stuck in the tank filters...nasty stuff.
