Question:

Betta fish & his new home...?

I have a very happy Betta fish who has been living in a one gallon bowl. Today, I bought him a 2 1/2 gallon tank with a plant, which he seems to love. He's always blowing bubbles nests, which I hear means the fish is happy and healthy.

However, his new tank is rectangle shaped and so he can see his reflection. He couldn't do this in his old bowl - so now, when he goes to the sides and sees himself, he gets in fighting mode. I don't think this is such a good thing, do you? Should I take it back and look for a 2 gallon bowl?

Thanks!

  1. they get stressed out when they are in their fighting mode i suggest you change it to its regulare bowl

  2. Its nothing to worry about, and I think they like tanks, alot better then bowls, but if your really concerned you should get that ocean background for the tanks, or print out one, and put it in back of the tank or where ever he see's his reflection, don't put it in the water though, I think he should do fine, flaring isnt always a bad thing. But it shouldnt be constant either, if he flares once in a while I wouldnt worry, but if hes always flaring and mad then he can become stressed. Hope this helps. And Good Luck! =]

  3. That is fine, he is fine. All my males are in 2.5's and are doing fine.

Also, bubblenests do mean they are healthy. But it is just instint, not happiness. That is a myth that it is happiness. I have seen a betta with water in the 60F range blowing a bubble nest, its just instinct. But yes, he is healthy.

  4. You may be able to reduce glare by some type of fish safe cleaning stuff. But you could also get a background on the tank. this will get rid of it for 1 side. I don't think it is too bad though. I keep my beta in a plastic tank [ i don't know the "proper" name for the material i know there's glass and what i have] And he doesn't seem to be able to see his reflection. I would try this because he gets more space and less stress.

P.S. the bubble nests mean he is ready to breed AND is happy! 8D

  5. hmmmm... idk what you should do, go to a pet store and ask someone about it

  6. I wouldn't worry about it unless he's doing it constantly, even then just add more pants. if you don't have a heater I suggest getting a 7.5watt heater for him to keep the temp in the right range :)

  7. Its not going to kill him, however they get stressed when they go in fighting mode, so you may want to get the bowl.

  8. Believe it or not, it's actually good for them to gets excited and flare up every once in a while. It gives them a little exercise :) Don't worry he'll be fine. Especially now since he's in a bigger tank!

  9. He will get used to it.

I had a betta in a hex tank for a while, and that really set him off.

After a week or so though he got used to it. Part of it is just getting used to their new surroundings.

Besides, if he occasionally catches his reflection, a little excitement is good for the guy.

If he keeps going at it after about a couple days though... try putting up some paper on the sides or an aquarium background.

I am sure that the tank if fine, and thank you for getting him out of the bowl! :D

    Good luck!

  10. Betta's should be in tanks and never bowls you need to heat the tank to 78 F and as far as fighting stance I find mine does it when he sees me to say hello its not that bad I have a mirror on mine for him to play with taped to the outside of the tank Betta's should not be kept in bowls people 2.5 gal is the min for them to stay in I find 5 gal. they love too the cups are only good for short term situations never for extended periods of time
