where can i buy meds like at walmart and target!! what are they called! how did he get it and is it life threatning

Pop eye is almost always caused by a gram positive bacterium, agains which Maracyn 2 will have little or no affect.  Maracyn (1) would be a MUCH better choice and would actually help your fish.  Walmart usually carries Mardel products, but if they don't, EM Tabs by API will work just as well as Maracyn (1).  Moving away from erythromycin, Triple Sulfa, Trisulfa, and possibly Maracyn TC or TC Capsules would be quite effective.  Be sure to remove any activated carbon from the filter, and if treating with a tetracycline based medication, keep the tank dark, as this drug degrades with exposure to light.  Pop eye is most prevalent in stressed fish.  This could be due to anything from poor water quality, temperature swings, cold water, too little space, poor diet, or similarly stressful things.  Get it a real tank with a real filter and a real heater or it will be in real trouble.  Pop eye is rarely life threatening, but if the infection is allowed to spread, or the eye opens and becomes infected with a more invasive bacteria, parasite, or fungus, it can be very lethal.

It's usually caused by poor water conditions and can be treated with Maracyn 2.  A betta should be housed in a 5 gallon heated filtered tank.  It is an infection and is definitely life threatening.

They should have marycyn 1 at walmart, as long as your walmart has a fish department. It will help more than marycyn 2.=)

Oh yes, and monkey41. Some of the best breeders in the world house bettas in an unfiltered and unheated aquarium! Just like the breeder and owner of the large betta website "BettaTalk" does. A betta can be just as happy in a 1 gallon tank w/out a heater and filter as in a heated and filtered tank. Non of my bettas have heaters OR filters and they are doing fine!
