Better Lucky to go 2 up in as many starts when she takes on the Ruthless Stakes field
Under the banner of Sheikh Mahmood’s Darley Stable, Captivating Lass powered down the stretch to win the Busanda Stakes, over a mile and 70 yards, at Aqueduct on 7 January, 2012, and then Sheikh Mohammed won the all important Sham Stakes, when his longshot, Out of Bounds, out ran the favoured Secret Circle, to announce his arrival as a 3-year-old, with a deadly message that says, look out Derby prospects.
Darley Stables enjoyed stakes victory on both coasts last week, and they will be looking to continue this good start to the New Year when they send out their newly turned 3-year-old filly, Better Lucky, to remain perfect after a single start in the Ruthless Stakes, which has a purse of $75,000, and will be run over a distance of 6 furlongs on 14 January, 2012.
The Kentucky bred daughter of Ghostzapper, out of grade 2 winning mare, Sahara Gold, by Seeking the Gold, Better Lucky won her debut race in emphatic style.
Under Ramon Dominguez at Aqueduct race course on 7 December, 2011, Better Lucky, in the mud, came off the pace to run down Kaleidoscope, and won the 6 furlong sprint by 4 ¼ lengths at first asking for trainer, Tom Albertrani, covering the distance in 1 minute and 12.83 seconds.
Evasive Cat, who finished third in the race, came back to win her maiden stakes race by 5 ½ lengths.
“I heard it was a pretty salty race, I heard the other four trainers all liked their horse in the race,” Albertrani said.
“I thought mine was a nice filly, I didn’t expect her to run as big as she did. I thought whatever happened, she would improve with the race. As well as she did, I’m hoping she puts out the same type of effort.”
Albertrani will be expecting a lot of pace in the Ruthless Stakes to come from Agave Kiss and Perennial Song, but if Better Lucky keeps a tag on both these fillies in the Ruthless Stakes, she can repeat her debut race performance under a nice hand drive at the closing stages of the race.
Better Lucky will break from post number 7 under jockey Cornelio Velasquez, in a race that has reeled in 10 female runners.
