Well, seeing as Super Joe's not done yet, I think it's a bit premature to start trying to figure that out. They're both great players, some of the greatest ever, without a doubt. Just because I'm an Avs fan, Joe has a special place in my heart, but I still think Yzerman is great.

O Captain, my Captain.  Yzerman... by a nose.

They have comparable stats, and they are two of the classiest players to ever lace up skates.  For now, Yzerman leads in nearly every statistical category (except playoff goals scored), and Yzerman has 3 Cup titles as opposed to Sakic's 2.  I grew up despising the Avs during the Blood Feud era, but I've always held respect for the 19 on the other side of the rivalry.

reasons why:

1) steve was arguably the best captain to ever play the game. he led his team to 3 stanley cups but it wasnt that he did it it was how he did it. in his young career he was the scorer geting the 165 point season in but when he got older his role switched more defensivly but he never stopped scoring.

2) yzerman was still a great player even in his final season. he played throough a lot of stuff that no player wud ever make it through not even the great sakic. his knee bothered him he had surgery knobody had ever came back from and was still a force to b scared of

3) the most important thing that sets aside yzerman from sakic and everybody else is his personality on and off the ice. yzerman was not only a nice guy but he was the classyest person. giving the cup to vlady in 98 shows that. yzerman was by far the most respected person to ever play the game. if you ask someone do you know his steve yzerman is most people will say yes. they dont even have to b from detroit he is known all around north america and that comes well deserved. his leadership was by far the best f any player and so many players he played against wud say they same thing
