  1. Virginia Beach, and the east coast of the Delmarva peninsula offer some decent surfing opportunities. Just about as good as you can get at most (not all, but most) Florida breaks. However, Come September, it gets colder in VA, and by January, you get to know what winter means. If you have never been in a VA winter ice storm, you are in for an experience. However, Florida does not have a winter... well, at least not what those of us from the northeast call a winter. There are a good number of primo surf spots, and it's lots warmer. therefore, Florida wins hands down ( Sorry Virginia fans, but the older you get, the more you hate the cold).

  2. Florida. Here's a link to good review on Florida's prime spot Sebastian's Inlet... http://aboutthebreak.com/sebastian_inlet... . Florida is where Kelly Slater is from; 'nuff said.

  3. I'm gonna have to go with Florida, for a number of reasons. One, Virginia is hardly a surfing hotspot. If you said maybe, North Carolina or Florida, but when thinking of a surf trip, no one thinks Virginia. Florida has much better surf. Granted, the fact that over 3000 bull sharks recently migrated to Florida is a bit of a turn off, the waves are just better. Sebastian's, New Smyrna and Cocoa Beach especially, probably some of the best surf on the East Coast. I mean, you have Slater, soon to be 9x world champ, who comes from Cocoa Beach. Hard to argue that it isn't a good surfing environment.

Also, its nicer in general than Virginia. Ok, so there's a lot of old people, but that just makes for more golf. You have Del Ray, which is a great little town with decent surf, and Miami, which, despite the coke, is a fun city. Also, if you have kids, there's Disneyworld, which is basically heaven to them.

I've been on surf trips in some pretty ratty places, slept in tents in the middle of nowhere just for good waves. But sometimes its nice to be in a populated place, and I'd choose Florida over Virginia any day.

  4. Florida is more consistent than VA and there are few spots that you are allowed to surf in VA.  Most of the coast line is gov't owned and of the public beaches there are only a few where you can surf at any time.  During the summer surfing has restricted hours on most of the other beaches.
