Betting Systems?

When I lived in Las Vegas I used to go over and watch horse racing and do a little betting.

I sat by this old guy a few times, who used to come in with different "Betting Systems" and try them out.

Most were not very good, but one day he was using a system where he took the Morning Line and grouped the horses by starting position

Then he assigned values to each position and the total value from the groups determined what groups he bet on.

He bet on the highest values and bet WPS. He did very good the few days I watched and talked to him.

Has anyone ever heard of this or something similar?

Any betting system, without handicapping, is doomed to fail. Pick up a Racing Form and do your homework, maybe then you can pick some real winners.

I was a professional gambler on horses for over a year and have never heard of that one. The values for certain areas is not uncommon though, people use such things as last start winners, barriers, jockeys, distance, weight etc to assign a numerical value. What I can share with you is find the horse that is "set" for the particular race. In most races there is less than a handful that are. You need to study trainers and which venues most of their horse win at, if they have a certain system . ie. perhaps they will run their horse a couple of times at an unsuitable distance then bring it back to its favourite track with no weight on its back.  Trainers are sneeky, work them out and you will start to win.

Betting systems (i.e selection systems as opposed to staking systems) do not work. There are only pointers and guides which you can follow.

If you have a system, it will inevitably throw up from time to time a horse which you think may have little chance.   Then, having backed a few of these, little chance selections, which lost and consequently having exercised your judgement to eliminate them in future, you then find that sufficient of them win to undermine your judgement.

If you do have a system, you must research it thoroughly before you start backing it and then you must follow it through thick and thin, until either you give it up or you gain the utmost confidence in it.  But as soon as you start picking and choosing among the horses it finds, you are on the slippery slope, and this applies even more so if part of the system involves increasing your stake in any way.
