Bettor's picks for Wells Fargo Championship - Part 1
Wells Fargo Championship is the last stop on the Professional Golf Association (PGA) Tour before the Players Championship, which is the fifth flagship event on the tour. The event has $6.5-million worth of prize money, but who will win it? Here is a list
of players, who might finish on the top on Sunday to bag the prize.
Phil Mickelson
Mickelson nearly won the tournament last year, if it weren’t for Rory McIlroy, who smashed the course lowest on the final day to rub defeat into the face of the American. This is the time to settle scores with the Northern Irishman, who is in a vulnerable
condition after the Masters aftermath. Moreover, the American has been on a break of three weeks, ever since he faced disappointment in the Masters. Apparently, the rest will work for him on his favourite course.
Rory McIlroy
The sixth seed in the world and the defending champion, Rory McIlroy is an ideal contender to finish in the Top 10 by the end of the weekend. The Northern Irishman was a mere miracle on the course of Quail Hollow a year back. He was one-under par, when he
stepped into the third round and rode the victory horse with a four-stroke margin after he posted 66 and 62 in the last two rounds respectively.
Apart from posting some fabulous numbers on the course, the player poses immense admiration for the venue. The player revealed that even if he wasn’t the defending champion, he would’ve still came to feature in the event.
This proves the player has a fair understanding of the course, which is why he wants to return to it. Lastly, while looking at his stats, one sees a player who had four Top 10 finishes in the current season out of seven starts, which means he is expected
to finish in an impressive position.
Jim Furyk
Furyk is one of the most successful players on the tour and as the tournament is being played on American soil, he has a clear edge over the rest of the field.
Moreover, this is his eighth visit to Quail Hollow Club, making his familiarity with the course quite evident. Indeed it is, as by looking at his career stats, one sees Furyk lifting the trophy in 2006 and later finishing as the runner-up in 2007.
On the other hand, the trends predict a situation otherwise. Furyk won the Verizon Tournament last year and followed it with a Top-7 finish at Quail Hollow. This year, the American finished tied for the 21st spot, which suggests that he won’t
be able to grab a spot in Top 10 players, which is against the predictions of bettors.
